Inspiration: NYC Fashion Week

I said that I was going to be writing about different decades this week – and I will- I just want to put that on hold for a moment. All the excitement of the Spring 2009 Ready To Wear fashion shows has gotten to me and I’ve spent all of my allotted blogging time, looking at pretty pictures and putting together my favorite looks. Realistically, it would take weeks to go through every single show but I’m really impressed with how many I’ve gone through thus far. If you read Sophista-Funk, you might have already seen my picks and read some of my commentary- so please forgive.

Things that jump out immediately:

  • Long tailored blazers will continue to dominate into spring. To recreate some of these looks, a bright creamsicle jacket is needed in addition to a darker more standard navy or black blazer.
  • Cinched waists are key. Skirt bottoms alternate between curvy skintight pencil bottoms and fuller more tulip like volumes.
  • Shoulders are still a favorite body part to accent with cutouts or stiffer almost padded construction.
  • Florals prints seem larger than Spring and Fall ’08.
  • Ruffles used sparingly as accents rather than voluminous layers (mostly).
  • “Men’s” dress pants, fuller through the thighs but still slim fitting.
  • Slouchy wrap dresses and tops cinched higher on the waist.
  • Plaid, plaid, plaid! I liked William Rast and Travota’s takes on fitted plaid tops – tucked into tailored bottoms.

Favorites

  • Tracy Reese
  • Diane Von Furstenberg
  • Twinkle
  • Jonathan Saunders
  • Lela Rose
  • DKNY
  • BCBG Max Azria
  • Isaac Mizrahi
